1. I was the first to write in my blog about rare earth, about how difficult it was to rid ourselves from activated rare earth when it was no longer needed.
2. Rare earth can be used for many things and in many ways. The rare earth represented by tin tailing, mostly ilmenite, when activated can be used in colour television. Today colour television uses plasma or LED.
3. This posed a problem of getting rid of the activated rare earth left in Malaysia. Finally it was agreed between Mitsubishi Electric and Malaysia that a site in Perak of almost a square kilometre be reserved for burying under concrete the activated “amang”.
4. Although visitors were banned and no human habitation was allowed at the site, I am told that now there is no more danger of radiation and human dwellings have been built there.
5. The Lynas project is not about activating the rare earth to make it radioactive. It is about extraction of the element to be used in making lithium ion batteries and magnets.
6. Lithium ion batteries are extensively used to power electronic products including mobile phones.
7. We carry in our pockets and use mobile phones all the time, putting them against our ears to hear and speak over the air waves. Obviously they are not harmful. This lithium ion battery does not emit harmful radiation.
8. As I understand it, the Lynas plant in Pahang does not involve activating any of the rare earth components to make them radioactive. The process cannot be harmful. As for the waste, it does not give off harmful radiation either. The waste is just ordinary earth which is normally mixed with the small amounts of rare earth. The necessity to export the waste does not arise.
9. Malaysia is endowed with significant quantities of rare earth. In its natural state it is harmless. Tin tailings or “amang” is probably more likely to give off radio waves than rare earth. The mining and extraction of rare earth can bring much wealth to Malaysia. In fact Malaysia should be producing lithium ion batteries for use in electric and hybrid cars. Today these batteries are being produced in Germany and Britain, using rare earth from China and elsewhere.
10. Lithium ion batteries will be much in demand in the future. They are usually rechargeable and can last for many years.
11. It would be a great loss to Malaysia if misguided people prevent us from extracting and using the high clean electrical capacities of rare earth. Just as the lithium ion batteries in the cellular phones is not harmful even when we carry them everywhere in our pockets and put them to our ears, the mining and extracting of rare earth from Malaysian earth will not harm us in any way.
MALAYSIA BOLEH! terlalu banyak jasa Tun nak memajukan negara kita...
ReplyDeleteAdo aku kesah pasal bateri lithium, bateri kete, bateri lampu picit..yg sahihnya puak UMNO tak jamin masuk syurga.
ReplyDelete'kenyataan Nik Aziz pasal Lynas'
salaam,
ReplyDeleterare earth mining can or could be one of the major income sources of Malaysia
ReplyDeleteHahahaha
ReplyDeleteDengan sangat mudah Tun M perbodohkan puak PR.
Simple and very informative article for a layman. Those anti Lynas should get rid of all the gizmos and gadgets wich use Lithium batteries.
Bateri Solar
DAP sebenarnya ambil kesempatan atas ketidakfahaman masyarakat tentang Lynas dan hasil mahsul prosesnya.. kemudian mereka dok canang kilang nuklear dan kimia macam kat Jepun yg merosakkan rakyatnya...maka rakyat yang kurang ilmu akan percaya 100%.. hakikatnya projek Lynas dengan kilang nuklear bagai langit dengan bumi bezanya... bila mereka mengadap lembaga pendengaran awam tentang Lynas mereka mengabang tak tentu hala...semua sumber kajian diambil dari internet dan reuters.. munasabahpun...itulah dasar DAP dan Fauziah Salleh.. hati mereka ni memang busuk sebusuk-busuknya
ReplyDeleteSetuju....
DeletePuak PR memang tak faham math ATAU sengaja tak mau nak faham ATAU sengaja nak buat hurahara.
ReplyDeleteOleh iitu saya guna unit yg mudah mrSv (a millionth of a sievert) dan memudah angka, kerana angka2 juga boleh mengelirukan.
The Truth About Lynas In Kuantan
In a worst case scenario, the Radiological Impact Assessment estimated that stack release may only contribute 2 mrSv/year
dari

INGAT BAIK2 2 (DUA) mrSv/year SAHAJA
Sekarang bandingkan pula RADIASI yang anda terima.
semua angka dlm unit mrSv (a millionth of a sievert).

ReplyDeleteaku cadangkan pulak kerajaan bina nuklear reactors untuk menjana elektrik.....
ReplyDeletegunakan msr...molten salt reactors
ReplyDeleteKEPADA SEMUA YANG SOKONG LYNAS,
ReplyDeleteSILA SIMPAN BAIK2 GAMBAR2 MEREKA2 YANG ANTI LYNAS. JIKA DITAKDIRKAN SATU HARI NANTI WAJAH2 YANG SAMA ITU NAK CARI KERJA ATAU NAK BUAT BISNES DENGAN LYNAS, TOLONG DEDAHKAN SIAPA MEREKA SEBENARNYA.
CONFIRM SATU HARI NANTI MEREKA AKAN JADI MACAM PENENTANG2 FGVH TU. TENTANG PUNYA TENTANG...LAST2 PEGI AMBIK DUIT RM5000..TAK MALU SUNGGUH!
bravo Tun M!
ReplyDeletesudah tentu syarikat2 gergasi technology dunia akan datang melabur di negara kita ni kalau access kepada bahan penting dari extract rare earth ni didapati dengan mudah...ni keluar dari mulut web IT dari singapork sendiri;

New iPad made in China for access to rare earth materials
Ashleigh Allsopp | April 23, 2012
http://www.computerworld.com.sg/print-article/19356/
The reason Apple makes its iPad in China is not just because of cheap labour, but also because rare earth elements used in the tablet can only be found there, according to reports.
The New York Times reports that China currently controls 95-97 per cent of the world's supply of the rare earth materials that Apple uses to make the iPad, and China's decision to cut export quotas has caused prices of the materials to rapidly increase.
Companies can only be exempt from China's rare earth export quotas by manufacturing within China, which is why Apple chooses to have its iPads made there, says iFixit.
Although it is not clear exactly what rare earths are used in the iPad due to Apple's secretive nature, Cambridge engineering professor, Dr. Tim Coombs, believes that there may be lanthanum in the iPad's battery, as well as "a range of rare earths to produce the different colours" in the display. Neodymium alloy might be the material found in the magnets in the iPad and the Smart Cover, and the glass is probably polished with cerium oxide, iFixit reports.
Because the price of rare earths has become so expensive, and China has almost complete monopoly of the materials, California's Molycorp and Australia's Lynas Corp plan to start mining rare earths themselves in the near future.
Barack Obama is also concerned about the rare earth situation, and has spoken to the World Trade Organisation arguing against China's rare earth policy, but specialists believe that by the time any action is carried out to change the policy, more manufacturers will have relocated factories to China.
Apple has been under scrutiny about its Chinese factories recently, after allegations that the company has been ill-treating its employees.
