PAS, which is riding high in Pakatan Rakyat, is fast losing its popularity among the Malays, with the eruption of another controversy caused by its deputy president Mohamad Sabu.
Many Malays who supported the party but are not registered members are shying away from the party as it struggles to keep its position as the only party that champions the Malay and Islamic cause.
Many PAS members on the ground are in a confused state as their cherished struggle is questioned by kampung folk who want to know whether the party recognises the communist insurgents whose ideology was against Islam.
An Islamic party based on Islamic fundamentalism, the party is now being viewed by many of its Malay members as a “mere tool” being used to benefit its partners in the Pakatan alliance, which are the Chinese-based DAP and Malay-based PKR.
Mohamad Sabu, or popularly known as Mat Sabu, stirred a hornet’s nest when he allegedly said the communist terrorists led by a Malay, Mat Indera, were the heroes in the attack on a police station in Bukit Kepong, Johor, during the Emergency in 1950. All the policemen and their family members including children were massacred.
This is not the first time Mat Sabu has put the party in an awkward position among the Malays who support its struggle for an Islamic state. His remarks (which he said were distorted by Utusan Malaysia) on the Bukit Kepong massacre is considered the worse statement to emerge from the party.
‘Mat Sabu a rabble rouser’
“Mat Sabu is not of leadership material as he is only a rabble rouser in the party. However, since the party delegates had elected him as the deputy president, we had no choice but to endorse his position.
‘However, we do not agree nor endorse many of his statements made in his current capacity given his level of intelligence is lower than that of the former deputy president Nasharuddin Mat Isa,” said a PAS member who wanted to remain anonymous when met during a Hari Raya gathering.
Several PAS members joined the numerous calls made for Mat Sabu to apologise as the Bukit Kepong killings is a sensitive issue that is close to the hearts of the Malays.
They said Mat Sabu should have steered clear from the incident which was recorded in history as one of the many atrocious acts of the communist insurgents in the country.
They agreed that Mat Sabu’s statement has somewhat damaged the party, especially when it is at the forefront in championing the Islamic cause. Support for PAS is eroding among many Malays who have yet to make up their minds on which party to vote for in the coming general election.
“Many Malays who supported us in the 2008 general election have yet to fully throw their support to us as their votes in that election were just ‘throw-away votes’ because they were dissatisfied with the then prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi,” said a PAS member.

The newly elected Deputy President of PAS, Mat Sabu, knows better than any body else, that he has made a HISTORIC blunder by describing the COMMUNISTS TERRORISTS(CTs) who attacked and burnt down the Bukit Kepong police station, together with all within it, as HEROES. But, as a typical PAS politician, he would not re-tract his statements…..despite a call by the Chairman of DAP, Karpal Singh, to do so.
To ‘add more salt to his injury’, Mat Sabu has made further statements, indirectly recognising the Malayan Communist Party(MCP), a branch of the Communist Party of Mainland China, led by Chin Peng, as HEROES in the struggles for the independence of Persekutuan Tanah Melayu….and even comparing the COMMUNISTS with other fighters for independence like Dr. Burhanuddin El-helmy, the second President of PAS, Tok Janggut in Kelantan and Abdul Rahman Limbung in Trengganu.
To Mat Sabu, all of them, the COMMUNISTS and Dr. Burhanuddin El-Helmy, Tok Janggut and Abdul Rahman Limbong were all HEROES. To Mat Sabu, whoever who fought against the British colonisers were all HEROES, while those who appeared to him to work alongside the British were all BRITISH OFFICERS. To Mat Sabu, all those who appeared to him to be working along-side the British deserved to be attacked, killed and even burnt down to become ASHES.
However, Mat Sabu is BLIND to one simple HITORICAL FACT that the COMMUNIST TERRORISTS (CTs) attack on the Bukit Kepong police station took place in 1950, two years after the proclamation of Persekutuan Tanah Melayu in 1948 by the British, after the Malays, united under the United Malays National Organisation(UMNO), bitterly opposed the MALAYAN UNION introduced by the British in 1946, months after the Japanese surrender in 1945. WHILST, other REAL MALAY HEROES who fought the British like Tok Janggut of Kelantan, Abdul Rahman Limbong of Trengganu, Mat Kilau and Datuk Bahaman of Pahang, Datuk Maharajalela of Perak and others fought the British BEFORE 1948.
Mat Sabu is BLIND to the fact that 1948 was a SIGNIFICANT year for the Malays. It was the year the MALAYAN UNION, which would have recognised the then IMMIGRANT RACES as ABSOLUTELY EQUAL TO the INDIGENOUS MALAYS/BUMIPUTRAS, was officially set aside, and the Persekutuan Tanah Melayu, negotiated among the British, Raja-Raja Melayu and UMNO were put in its place. The setting up of Persekutuan Tanah Melayu, as a transition Government on the road of FULL INDEPENDENCE, was agreed upon by Raja-Raja Melayu and UMNO. It was NO CO-INCIDENCE that immediately after the proclamation of Persekutuan Tanah Melayu in 1948 that the Chin Peng-led MCP started their ARMED INSURGENCE against Persekutuan Tanah Melayu.
Mat Sabu should be sent to KEMUNTING ‘NURSERY’, to reflect on WHY the MCP was so opposed to the setting up of the Persekutuan Tanah Melayu, which were agreed upon by UMNO and Raja-Raja Melayu. Mat Sabu should undergo an ‘eye operation’, so that he could see the EARTH AND SKY DIFFERENCE between the genuine struggles of Malay heroes like Tok Janggut, Abdul Rahman Limbong, Mat Kilau, Datuk Bahaman and Datuk Maharajalela, and the futile struggle of the MAINLY IMMIGRANT COMMUNISTS.

BN is rejoicing at this latest fiasco raised by the opposition and veteran politician like Karpal understands the reason why and the problem associated with it when this issue was raised earlier... lots of damage control need to be done by the opposition... downfall of the opposition is not because of anwar but alas due to Mat Sabu... the coming PRU is without a doubt in BN's hands for sure, unless of course BN is stupid enough to blow this away due to blunders made by the appointed ministers and Rosmah...
